Breadline Africa Award The 6th Bounty!
Daniel Neville
Over the last couple of months we have been hosting briefs from some amazing charities that do outstanding work in their particular fields. The first brief was from Breadline Africa who have made it their mission to give people a leg up and make sure that they can live and work above the breadline. Today we are very pleased to announce that Breadline Africa has chosen a winner, although the competition was tight as always.
Before we get to announcing who the winner is we have a couple of words from the Breadline Africa team for you all.
"Overall, Breadline Africa's experience with Idea Bounty has been fantastic. In terms of the ideas you have submitted the scope and quality has been incredible and we were very impressed with the level of research that went into our work and the fundraising industry in general. The most common theme around your submissions was the demonstration of involving the community and approaching corporates... both aspects that are vital in fundraising.”
~ Marianna Boguslavsky
Like I mentioned the race to the finnish was a tight one and Breadline Africa did have a couple of honorable mentions to give out. So well done to both Andy Croly (Breadline Africa Online Skin) and Lisa Ballot (Bartering For Wealth) for submitting some fine ideas. But now, without anymore delay the winner of the Breadline Africa brief is.... Shaun Dunne - nice one!
Congratulations Shaun, I hope that $1500 goes towards something awesome and you get to be proud of an idea that truly going to make a difference. As is tradition here on Idea Bounty, read on to see what Shaun had to say about ideas, fundraising and the online world.
1. What was going through your head when we called you with the good news. Did Matt’s soothing phone voice give anything away? What was your reaction?
I knew that the competition had ended, but I wasn't sure how long it would be until the winner was announced and informed. When I found out I was just going into a meeting at work and I literally jumped out of my seat. I had to then sit though the meeting thinking about it.
2. What drew you to submitting an Idea? Was it the brand or the challenge presented?
To be honest, I had just read about the site in a magazine, I headed over to the site, signed up, it was the only available brief on the site so I sat around for a couple of days, thought about it, and just cranked it out.
3. How much did your work as a PHP developer influence your idea?
I suppose my work forces me to think very logically, so I thought through each of the steps that would need to be taken. Im a very creative person naturally so I think that helped more.
4. What was your process for tackling the brief and what do you think gave you the advantage?
I don't believe that I had any advantage over what anyone else could have. My process for tackling the brief was to just creating something that I would participate in. If something interests me, I would, without a doubt, take it upon myself to spread the word. My process involved just brainstorming ideas and researching what has been done, and what hasn't.
6. Winning the Bounty must have been nice, how do you feel about the fact that your idea is going to go a long way in helping change lives?
I can't wait to see this adopted, it think given the right chance it could be massive, and I can't wait to just be a part of that. I also think that it could get creative juices flowing for others and get them forming new ways to raise money online - it certainly has got mine going.
7. What do you think the major challenges faced by online fundraisers are?
First and foremost, the technology. It moves fast and they have to try and keep up. I don't know if they just can't afford to hire the right people, or if they feel that there is just no market for them to raise money in. Secondly, they have to try and get to the right people first, a way to raise money virally, get the word out and spreading fast. There are so many ways they could do it, they just have to find the right one first.
8. Web and third party applications are becoming more and more popular these days - why do you think this is and do you have any examples of Web applications that you personally think rock?
People just live on the web now days, its simply just a way of life. Some might say that its a bad thing, I disagree. I can get news faster, spread news faster. I can watch TV on demand, I can order food, play games, chat with friends, keep up to date with family members who i don't get to see often. I love it, all of it.
At the moment, its all about Twitter - I know it has its haters, but I love it. I also has an addiction to Adobe AIR apps. I pretty much download any of them, and just try to find a use for them.
9. Any plans for the $1500?
I would like to buy a new TV, but there are some bills to pay. I need to take out my good friend Merrick Fox for some Legends fried chicken though, Mixed Doubles meals all round.
10. How long did you spend on your idea? Was it a long process or was it just one of those light bulb moments?
A good day. Thinking, brainstorming and then ironing out the creases.
11. You have a passion for coding Web apps - are there any that you have worked on that we can see? Can you tell us more about Lunar Park Designs?
Lunar Park Designs is in its infancy at the moment, and its only me. I am trying to put a personal portfolio together at the moment, but between home life and work, there just isn't enough hours. www.lunarparkdesigns.com should be up and running soon, but im more involved in a few projects and getting them finished before anything substantial goes up.
LPD will be just me for the time being, developing and designing funky little web apps, until something big comes along. Expect a lot to be done with the Twitter API and the odd site here and there.
12. Lastly if you were given an unlimited budget to develop a Web application what would you create?
I dont think money is the limitation, I think imagination is. Its actually coming up with the concept. We all want to develop the next big thing, but as soon as you do that, you got to carry on, it can't stop there. Improvements need to be made, you need to keep up with trends. If I COULD create anything, Im sure it would be something that involved Streaming Video content.

Hi Shaun and well done from Pretoria, SA.
Does one have to design a web site or is it for Idea Bounty or is it possible to just write down your ideas and send them in?
Kind regards
Lyn
Hi Lyn,
We are just looking for ideas. So yes just register, write down your idea and submit! Our legal system also ensures that the idea remains your intellectual property until is is bought (won the bounty)
