Stop Motion Wednesday - Insert Coin
Daniel Neville
This weeks stop motion video is one that I originally was sceptical of. Insert Coin pays homage to the golden age of coin operated video games by recreating some classics purely through some insanely intricate stop motion animation and a bucket load of coins. Produced by the guys at DreamHack Kreativ this one will make your head hurt trying to guess how long this took them:
So before a comment war erupts - This is a stop-motion video despite the impressive 3D effect. In many ways it would be more fair to describe this as a stop motion rotoscope animation. The projector on the roof provides a guide for the placement of the coins, so all that needed to be done was to follow the pattern laid out. And incase you try to pick holes in this one - there are places where this does look fake due to consistent gaps between the coins. However, it was pointed out to be that once a frame changes not all the coins are going to move. In other words only changes in the layout of the coins between each frame are the ones that need to be moved. So from frame to frame they don't clear the whole board, but only the ones that need to move. This is not that hard to do but it is insanely time consuming as well as imaginative. Nicely done guys!
