Stop Motion Wednesday - Ok Go: 'Last Leaf'

Daniel Neville

Ok Go are arguably more famous for their music videos than their music and this weeks stop motion probably serves to cement this point of view. To be honest the band has set the bar very high for themselves - the ridiculously complex video for "This Too Shall Pass" is a good example - however their new video for "Last Leaf' is easily on the same level, even if it takes and entirely more 'artsy' approach.

 Ok Go!

'Last Leaf' is a stunning stop motion animation made with 2,430 laser-etched pieces of toast that once run through hands of master animator Geoff Mcfetridge reveals moody touching scenes of blustery evenings, forests made of guitars and other delights. The track itself is actually one of the better songs the band has produced in my opinion (I am not generally a fan of catchy indie-pop) and to me the video is the perfect addition to the bands image. The song is quite, intimate and beautiful and I really do think Ok Go have done a great job at putting together visuals and compliment the music perfectly. - well worth a watch.

The video has a nice back story too it too. Apparently Samsung approached OK Go and asked them what their next project would be, OK Go said they wanted to do something animated, so Samsung supplied them with an NX100 camera with which the project was shot (each second of the video is a sequence of 15 photographs). You can check out some behind-the-scenes footage on Samsung’s website.
