Stop Motion Wednesday - Flip Book Style Animation
Daniel Neville
Parkour, which a few years ago was an little know sport originating in France, has in a relatively short space of time become an internationally recognised sport and is sill gaining new fans all the time. So it is not a surprise that we have seen some very creative bits of work around the sport pop up and this weeks stop motion is a great example;
The short was created by Serene Teh as a part of her graphic design degree and was done with a technical drawing pen, frame by frame. Personally I love the way it references the old filp-book style of animation that I was fond of creating in my mathematics textbook (now you know why im not an accountant!) This reinvention of a classic animation style is brilliantly done and works perfectly with the subject matter.
Im not sure but I have a feeling that Serene Teh was influenced by a stop motion short called Videogioco by Donato Sansone. Be forewarned though - the short has a bit of the old ultra-violence in terms of content and there are some quite disturbing images. Never the less the way the main character moves across the paper getting stabbed, cut, hit, swallowed and kicked through the air only to be finally re-united with his body for a closing punch, only to have the whole thing start all over again is amazing. Props to both Serene Teh and Sonato Sansone for these awesome shorts!
