Every year it feels like its becoming harder and harder to effectively communicate with people - the amount of advertising clutter and noise that exists is simply amazing and almost everyone has become very good at letting all the TV spots, full page colour ads, promotions and billboards slip past without taking much notice. As you can imagine this is somewhat of a problem for people who do want to get something noticed...
Two of the simplest ideas I have seen actually made me want to hurt their creator Shed Simove, purely because they are ideas (well one of them at least) that im sure have occurred to at least 45% of the 6 billion odd people on this planet ... The difference is Shed actually pulled it off, which is just annoying.
The first of Sheds ideas is the simply and aptly named
Pooblicity stunt. Like I said you have probably thought about this yourself -
why dont they advertise on toilet rolls in public bathrooms? Surely this is an unexplored canvass to paste ones marketing messages over? Well Shed did it - He
printed 1000 toilet rolls advertising his stand up comedy show at the
Edinburgh Comedy Festival.
Im guessing the idea of
Pooblicity never really caught on due to the somewhat negative connotations attached - imagine
Burger King getting involved in Pooblicity! Never the less,
one brilliant stunt and an awesome way to get people to come to your show.
The next ingenious idea from Mr Simove is something he calls
Crabvertising... The idea is simple -
advertise on the back of a Crab, and why not I say. Shed describes Crabvertising as a "brand new concept in advertising that makes use of a hitherto untapped resource: a crab shell. Perfect for capturing attention both before and during mealtimes."
Personally I cant think of a cooler way of getting people to come to your shows - well
as long as they order the Crab. As I said both of the above ideas are so simple that they actually sound silly - but apparently thats the way to get noticed in todays world,
it worked for Shed.
