Geek Fashion: On the Cutting Edge

Daniel Neville

Many moons ago, whilst on a sabbatical in the Himalayas, I swore I would never write about fashion; but for this I’ll make an exception. I wouldn’t be caught dead in a pink shirt and white leather shoes, but buy me a NES buckle and I’d rock it all year round!

NES belt Buckle

Seriously, how sick is that? And it’s not just for awesome guys:

The NES buckle

Check that out – her clones are wearing it too! No doubt about it, the NES buckle is geek chic. Moving on, and we have the unfathomably sexy Pong dress.

Pong Dress

And it’s not just for showPong is actually playable on the 5x7 LED screen worked into the fabric. The controls are plugged in at hip level, and every time a point is scored the green score display at chest level blinks seductively. Awesome.

Of course, an outfit as alluring as this wouldn’t be complete without some shades to match; which brings us to ThinkGeek’s 1.3 megapixel Spy Camera Sunglasses.

Spy Camera Sunglasses

The included RF remote control means you can easily snap shots on the sly, while a USB 2.0 interface makes transferring data a breeze. Perfect for a cycle race, a trip to the beach and skulking around in dark corners of a club. These are both stylish and sneaky, and I like that. So, we’ve covered belts, dresses and shades – let’s round things off with some t-shirts. The first of which happens to feature a camera too…

T-shirt camera phone

I don’t know if this is a homage to the famous Flight of the Conchords gag, or just a blatant rip-off, but either way, it’s rad.
Show me someone who says that doesn’t rock their world, and I’ll show you a liar. But, if you think that’s cool, wait till you get a load of this:

T-Equaliser

Firebox describes the T-Equaliser as the ‘ultimate in clubwear’. I’m not sure I’d go that far – I’m quite partial to the NES buckle myself – but it’s certainly wicked. Embedded in the T-Equaliser is a working LED equaliser that actually reacts to the music it ‘hears’. Powered by a mini battery pack hidden inside the hem, the display illuminates and moves in time to the music – the louder the better. Factor in some snazzy Spy Camera Sunglasses and you’ll be the life of the party; no doubt.

Of course, if there’s one thing all geeks pride themselves on, it’s being prepared. In the event that all the attention gets you in a spot of bother, you may need to confuse your would-be assailants – which is where our final piece of geek couture comes into play.

Porthole T-Shirt

Boasting a wireless 5.8 GHz pinhole video camera and embedded TFT LCD screen, the Interactive Portal Shirt simulates teleportation portals.

The shirts work by interfacing in pairs and displaying the video feed captured by another shirt in the vicinity. So, let’s say you and a friend go out somewhere and he wanders off in pursuit of some lucky lady. Provided he’s within range, whatever his camera is recording will be displayed on your t-shirt, and vice versa. Very cool and more than a little unnerving for anyone who happens to take a glance at your manly chest.

 Check it out:

If you don’t get the video, you haven’t played Portal. In which case, shame on you.

Tx for the fashion update, Tim. But you didn't mention the sombreros in pic 1. Granted, they're not technologically up there, but this is definitely a cool look that could take you anywhere.

My pleasure, Geekette.

You certainly bring up a valid point. They're cool as is, but just imagine if they were imbued with some sort of cutting edge geekery?

I'd be beside myself with excitement.

Geek fashion. Bestill my heart.
