Learn Something Every Day
Daniel Neville
A couple of weeks ago I stumbled across a site which caught my attention for a good few minutes - so I thought I would share it with you. Learn Something Every Day is a self initiated daily project by UK based design studio Young.
The concept behind the site is very simple - one of the reasons why I like it so much - and basically works in the following way. Each day a fact, along with a little illustration is posted on the site... told you it was that simple. Users are encouraged to submit facts for inclusion and the submitter of the daily fact is also acknowledged.
There are a few reasons why this site excited me so much. First the concept, although simple, is very entertaining and the 'facts' are fun and uniquely illustrated. Second is that Young, in their own words, is a "studio adept in brand identity development, illustration, print and interactive design" and Learn Something Every Day is an awesome way to show thiese skills off. There is also a 'super special monthly poster' which is a full colour illustration of the best fact that month - the submitter gets a free A2 print and there are another 50 limited edition prints for sale too.
I also really liked the layout and design of the site which is based on a web publishing and community-building platform called Cargo. The platform has a strong emphasis on design, layout, image quality and typography which is perfect for the Learn Something Every Day content. Check out Cargo here.
Im not sure how accurate the facts on Learn Something Everyday are (although I dont think being 100% factual is the point) but the facts will make you smile and sometimes raise an eyebrow. The illustrations are cute and charming and ultimately the site does a wonderful job is supporting the brand of Young - hell I like them already and I haven't even seen any client work... and thats what makes the site such a brilliant idea.
