Interview: Steal Our Ideas
Katharina Scholtz
So. Steal Our Ideas.com, shockingly, is a site created by two guys who want you to steal their ideas. From what I can tell (read:assume) they're using the site as a way to connect with people who like their ideas and keep those idea generation tools (their sparkly minds) fresh. I got hold of them via email, check out the answers from Jon and Adam below:
Um, why are you giving your ideas away?
Both of us love coming up with ideas, but didn't have a great outlet for it. So many people are driven by a fear that their one good idea is going to be stolen that it prevents them from coming up with more ideas. Of course, ideas get stolen all the time, sometimes unintentionally, but we were tired of holding them in. We're constantly filling our heads with ideas, and we created stealourideas.com as a place to put them & share them with the world.
Have you been trying to track what happens to them?
Yes, we're curious to see where our ideas end up. So far a lot of our tracking has been through blogs and press. We've also been lucky enough to get some live briefs for agencies and clients that are looking for creative alternatives.
How many ideas have you sent out there?
The site has about 35 postings, but we've also been sending ideas back and forth via email to people. We've sent more ideas out in the last month than we ever thought possible.
Do you keep any really good ideas for yourselves?
No. There are always more ideas to think up, it doesn't make much sense to us to hold on to them anymore now that we have the perfect place to channel them - argue back and forth and convince one another.
Have you had much feedback from the public? What’s the general sentiment?
Yeah lots of feedback. The site has a been a true testament to blogging. It's really amazing how fast people respond the first minute we post a new idea. Generally speaking, we've been getting great responses and press inquiries from around the world. Our fan base is a mix of creative professionals and bloggers, so we try to keep everyone happy by keeping our posts as eclectic as possible.
Do you steal other people’s ideas?
No. Coming up with stuff is a good time, and we don't have a reason to. It's worth mentioning that people keep sending us requests to contribute ideas of their own, but for now we enjoy doing all the work oursleves.
What is your stance on say, a Creative Commons license, and why haven’t you guys used one?
The point of our site is to overcome the idea of creative licence. Business, lawyers and the worry of getting ideas stolen is something that inhibits creativity, hence the irony of our site name.
How does this relate to your day jobs?
We're taking a break from the advertising world right now to pursue some side-projects and reinvigorate our love of coming up with ideas (working too long in the ad-business can strip you of that).
Our interests were naturally peaked by the idea in the image above. Maybe we stole your idea before you had it, do you think that makes us ninja's of the mind?
With the number of people on the planet, ideas surely overlap. Great ninjas think alike.
