It’s More Than Just Words
Daniel Neville
Words are an amazing thing. They aren’t just a means to communicate; they are a form of art. Poetry, plays and song lyrics are just a few of these instances where words become art; but it doesn’t stop there. Something that has grabbed my attention in the past little while is typography and how it is used by designers to create amazingly vivid artworks... And some of them are just too good not to share!
These were posters done by designer Steve Yee for the Grammy Awards 2009. He used the titles of each artist’s favourite songs to create the images. Using colour texture and sizing he was able to capture not only the form of the artists but their personality.
Zebras have always been well suited to design and this is awesome. Designer, Jarrell Goh (aka fuzzyzebra) literally used the word zebras to make a Zebra (yes I know that it sounds lame, but it’s true!).
This is a more serious one. This design was created using words that are used everyday with no thought to how derogatory and hurtful they could be. When used to build the image of the gun, the true weight of their meaning is reenforced..I must be bad though, some of these words I used to describe myself! Artist Unknown
8A poster by Jeff Matz that I think is really cool... shows just how passionate designers can be about typography!
A have to say I could not agree more with Mr Jeff Matz. Did you know that there was actually a petition a few years ago to ban Comic Sans! Some may say that banning the font style is going a bit far, but hey when typography is your art form can you blame them?
