Five Awesome Places To Grab A Drink
Daniel Neville
The Tree Pub
Sunland Farm, Limpopo, South Africa
This bar inside the trunk of a Baobab tree is definitely one of the coolest places to grab a drink. It was fashioned inside a massive 22 meter high tree which naturally hollows out with age. Carbon dating has put the tree at about 6,000 years old.
This tree is so cool I have to throw some more numbers out there
- It has a 48 meter circumference
- The walls are up to 2 meters thick in some places
- The Baobab pub has 5 meter high ceilings and comfortably seats 15 people
- The tree has its own cellar, with natural ventilation to keep the beer cold!
How About a Drink In The Sky?
I know technically these count as two venues, but since they both have the same defining feature I’m lumping them together.
Skye - San Paulo, Brazil
San Paulo is the third largest metropolis in the world and right on the top floor of the Hotel Unique is Skye - which uses the skyline as its only decoration. Up here you will find not only a bar but a rooftop pool! The wild design of the rooftop is open and sparse with no discernable railings or walls to inhibit the view or set boundaries for where the building ends and the astonishing view begins.
Sirocco - Bangkok, Thailand
64 floors above the hectic streets of Bangkok, this sexy rooftop bar boasts 360 degree views of the city with city lights in every direction as far as the eye can see. Quite frankly I’m not too sure how many drinks you could have before things got a little scary.
The Toilet Bar
Vienna, Austria
The "toilet bar" of Vienna is actually a public restroom which features several urinals shaped like thick lipsticked lips with teeth and a tongue. Patrons were charged 75 cents for each visit. Eventually, the urinals were removed after facing public and political pressure - people said they were offensive and sexist objects.
The Electric Bird Cage
London, UK
This venue has some of the most magnificently weird design I have ever seen. Combining Alice In Wonderland with Russian aristocrat tastes, the interior includes a Fibonacci-style patterned floor, tables made of tree roots, gigantic pink hands for chairs, lavish Vegas-style mirrors, imposing black stallions, two snarling black polymer panthers, a carousel bar and iron birdcage chandeliers dangling from a pink ceiling. Even the DJ operates from a birdcage.
And if all that was not enough to entice you, try the signature Electric Birdcage bowl filled with a mix of champagne, Absolut Raspberri peach schnapps, Cointreau, Absolut Citron, strawberry purée, gomme syrup, orange juice, fresh raspberries and blueberries. Now that’s what I call a weird drink!
The Pitcher And Piano
Nottingham, England
Ever sat in Church on a Sunday and longed for a beer? Ok maybe that’s only me, but regardless of that if you take a trip to Nottingham in England you may just pass up the opportunity to have a beer in a renovated church - with a suitably witty and English name. Check how long the bar is!
